140 characters and an endless news feed is gaining ground and captivating teens while Facebook’s popularity has decreased significantly among teens in the past year.

The numbers from digital trends show, “26 percent of teens chose Twitter as their social network as choice, while 23 percent chose Facebook and Instagram.”

Although this percentage may not seem like a significant difference in the two social media sites, when compared to the numbers of teens who have chosen Facebook as their most important network in the past polls, the decline in Facebook’s popularity is clear.

Forbes magazine states: “Just a year ago, 42% of teens surveyed told pollsters they preferred Facebook to all other services; by spring, that had fallen to 33%, and now stands at 23%.”

The truth is, Twitter is taking over social media for teenagers.

“I never use my Facebook anymore, and the only people I know who still use it are my family, so I will get on time to time for them,” sophomore Sydney Hess said. “I prefer Twitter because it is usually a lot more interesting and more people I am friends with use it frequently, but I will probably use Facebook again when I go to college.”

Although Facebook has seen a drop among it’s teen users, especially younger teens, Facebook is still popular among college students.

“Facebook has kind of gotten worn out and nobody uses it anymore like MySpace. My parents and some family use it so that’s really the only use,” junior Kelley Kauf said. “After my brother went to college he started to use it more though, so I think it gets more popular the older you get.”
