Leopards set to face Lions in area round of playoffs

With the possibility of freezing rain, the Leopards will bundle up and head south to Waxahachie to play the Ennis Lions in the area round of playoffs tonight.

It’s going to be cold and it’s going to be a tough game.

Ennis is ranked number 13 by texasfootball.com and is 9-0 for the season. Last week, the Lions beat Lancaster, the team the Leopards lost to to end the 2012 season.

The Leopards are picked to lose by many prognosticators with some predicting a Ennis to win by at least 35 points.

Here’s why some might say that.

The Lion’s quarterback Devin Smith has a 68.52 completion rate with 1755 yards for the season which is very close to Dakota Michaels’ 54.64 completion rate and 1760 yards. However, it is still unknown if Michaels or Bowman Sells will be in the QB position tonight, or for that matter, either of the two sophomores.

The  run game is where Ennis looks better than the Leopards, at least on paper.

The Lion’s leading rusher Terence Williams has run the ball 169 times for a total of 1346 yards and 21 touchdowns. The second leading rusher, Nicholas Gabriel, has 108 attempts with 859 yards and 15 touchdowns.

The Leopards leading rusher is Daniel Sefcik. Sefcik has run the ball 121 times for a total of 936 yards and 8 touchdowns.

In terms of receptions, the Leopards are stronger than the Lions. Chochy Luce is the Leopards leading receiver with 55 receptions for 1272 total yards and 12 touchdowns.

Marcus Daggs, the Lion’s leading receiver, has only 25 receptions for a total of 411 yards and two touchdowns.

On paper, it seems that if the Leopards can stop the Ennis run game and do what they usually do in terms of passing, that it will be a pretty evenly matched game.

The game is tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Waxahachie.
