Sells back as starting quarterback

After missing more than 4 weeks with a collarbone injury, sophomore Bowman Sells is back as the starting quarterback for the varsity football team.

“When I found out I was cleared to play I was very anxious to get back on the field,” Sells said.

In the effort to get back on the field as soon as possible, Sells did whatever he could to speed up his rehabilitation.

“I used a bone stimulator to help the bone heal quicker,” Sells said.  “I also used certain exercises to strengthen and increase the mobility in my shoulder.”

Although the team lost three of four games without Sells, the play of backup quarterback sophomore Dakota Michaels exposed the team to a different style of play.

“Obviously Bowman has a huge arm, big, strong arm, he can throw the ball all over the field,” head coach Matt Green said.  “The thing that Dakota does is he scrambles. He’s a little bit like Johnny Manziel. He runs around and makes plays with his feet.

While Sells is back playing, his collarbone is still healing which may mean designed quarterback runs may be limited until he is back to full health.   That could open the door for Michaels to see more time at quarterback when he returns from his recent knee injury.

“Obviously with Bowman coming off of an injury we’re going to be very limited on calling run plays to him,” Green said.  “[Dakota is] an excellent runner, and once his knee is healthy, something that we’ll look for is to get him back in the offensive package by running the ball.”

In his first game back, Sells completed 17 of 30 passes for 217 yards with 4 touchdowns and 1 interception as the Leopards beat the Denison Yellowjackets 56 to 42, giving Denison its first loss of the season in district play.

“When I was back on the field I couldn’t even tell I had ever been injured,” Sells said.
