A new boundary on what is acceptable on campus is being tested with the emergence of e-cigarettes. This mock-cigarette was originally created for addicted smokers who decided to get away from the harmful effects that tobacco brings. However, the e-cig is becoming more and more popular among students who are having their first smoking experience.
Easily accessible, the e-cig can be purchased for as little as $10, but also ranges up to $80. This electronic inhaler vaporizes a flavored liquid solution of the consumer’s choice into an aerosol mist, mocking the action of smoking an actual tobacco product.
“Not all e-cigs have nicotine in them and you can buy different levels of nicotine juice,” senior Chris Lofton said. “You can buy some with no nicotine at all and some with high levels of nicotine. Without the nicotine all it is is water vapor.”
This liquid solution, or e-juice, comes in dozens of flavors either sold in a bottle or pre-filled disposable cartridges. The most popular of these solutions for many students are original tobacco, menthol, coffee, vanilla, ,mint, cherry, and peach. A five pack of flavor cartridges costs around $12.
Administration is not in the dark about the e-cig issue. They are fully aware that some students are in possession of the new electronic smoking sensation.
“I got my e-cig taken up in class by Coach Villarreal and I got ISS and I also missed my first soccer playoff game,” Lofton said.
There are many potential issues brought up by the use of electronic cigarettes, including whether or not they are even allowed on campus.
“Legally e-cigarettes are considered a tobacco product, they are prohibited on campus as stated in the LISD Student Code of Conduct,” assistant principal Chris Mayfield said.
