Following the food fight during “A” lunch on Thursday, the cafeteria was in desperate need of a clean up, and it began as soon as the area was cleared of students. Some students, however, stayed to aid in the clean-up.
“One minute everything was calm and still, and then the room exploded,” junior Brad Jacobs said. “Food was going everywhere, and I was scared and didn’t know what to do.”
The outburst was a quick and messy way to cover the cafeteria, and leave almost no person nor surface out of range
“People started throwing stuff and I ducked under the table and ran out,” sophomore Tommy O’Connor said. “I got hit though.”
After the cafeteria was clear of students, it was time for the food to be scraped, mopped, and scrubbed of the table, chairs, floors, and even the ceilings.
“I felt really bad for the custodians afterwards,” Jacobs said. “The people who started should have clean up. You clean up your own mess, you had your fun, and now you should make it right.”
Students who had participated, and even those who had not, volunteered to help the janitorial staff clean up the food covered cafeteria.
“I felt really bad for the janitors, it sucks to have to clean it because it was a huge mess,” senior Lindsey Cox said. “I thought it would be a good idea to help them out. There were probably 15 people, and it took about 25 minutes because there was so much.”
Although it was generous of those who did not participate in the creation of the mess, some think it would have been a better punishment to have the people who planned the fight, rather than have the custodial staff and helpful volunteers clean.
“Those kids who helped clean up should be commended for their good deeds, but I also think the administration kind of blew it out of proportion,” Jacobs said.
Involved in the clean up, O’Connor saw first-hand the food covered cafeteria, and volunteered to help the custodial staff along with other students.
“It was disgusting, there was stuff everywhere in the main part of the cafeteria,” O’Connor said. “There was stuff on the ceiling, it was gross.”
Although the clean up was disgusting work, some of the students who volunteered still believed it was worth it to have a little fun.
“I thought it was kind of funny, every kid wants to have a food fight at some point in their life,” Cox said. “I thought it was okay, a lot of people that participated in it helped to clean it up too, so that made it a little better than if they had not.”
