Let them paint walls

When students imagine a school, some see something like a prison: blank colorless walls.. But what if teachers could change that? Teachers should be able to paint the color of their walls to make the learning environment more fun and engaging.

A little color on the walls is not going to be too distracting to the students, unless the whole room is painted neon yellow. It could be distracting if all four walls were painted a bright color, but the school should at least let the teachers paint one of their walls. If the wall that the teacher primarily teaches on was painted, it could focus the students attention towards the teacher.

Some people believe that the color could be distracting, but the truth is, white is worse because it does not engage students at all. It makes students have the opposite effect of wanting to learn. The blank walls bore students and they do not want to sit quietly or listen to what the teacher is saying in class. If the learning environment was more colorful and engaging, I think that the teachers could grab student’s attention and hold onto it longer than with the white, prison-like environment.

According to the paint company Sherwin-Williams, the key to a stimulating classroom is using colors. High contrast colors are stimulating, while lighter colors can increase a student’s focus. The color of a classroom has a high impact on a students learning and helps create a stimulating learning environment.

If there are so many benefits, then why can’t the teachers paint their classrooms? One reason is that it can be expensive to get the paint and then paint it back at the end of the year, however if the teachers are willing to do it, they should be allowed to paint the walls. There is not a good reason why the walls of our school should not be painted in order to stimulate the students and help them increase their work proficiency and help them focus.
