Grabbing a bite to eat before heading to first period will now require a look at the clock. Beginning next Monday, the breakfast line, which was previously open from 8 a.m. to the end of first period at 9:45 a.m., will now close at 8:40 a.m. and reopen at 9 a.m.
“We had noticed that there were a good amount of students who were still in line at 8:44 and there was no way they would get to class on time,” assistant principal Bruce Coachman said. “So we just want to end the time that the line is open a little earlier so that they will stop being late to class because they are getting food.”
This change in policy was implemented in part by complaints from teachers.
“The teachers said that a lot of kids were tardy because they were getting food,” lunchroom worker Gloria Vallao said.
Although the line will close at 8:40 a.m. to encourage students to be in class on time, it will reopen so that students who have athletics first period will still be able to buy breakfast.
“We will open the line open again for them [the student athletes in first period],” Coachman said. “It will probably open back up around nine.”
The administration hopes that this change will encourage students to be on time to class.
“We feel that the students have enough time to get their food and we want to change the environment that doesn’t allow them to get food after 8:40 because they need to get to class,” Coachman said. “This is just a measure to make students a little more conscientious about getting to class on time.”
