Despite the variety of extracurricular activities on campus, one in particular seems to be slightly overlooked. The American Sign Language classes learn from a large spectrum of material covering everything from communication to Deaf Awareness.
In order to raise notice for Deaf Awareness, a carnival will be held in the commons on October 26th to help raise money and spread the word about the deaf community. Many of the ASL students are hand-making goodies and purchasable items that will be for sale at a low price.
Senior Scarlett Smith, a four year ASL student, has been knitting and crocheting vibrant plush stuffed animals that will be selling for around $12.
“The proceeds go straight to the Deaf Action center to help raise money for that organization,” Smith said. “There will be a bake sale, bracelets, face painting, a cake walk, a raffle, and lots of other fun activities at the carnival.”
Along with those activities and games, there will be cheap treats and homemade goodies sold for a dollar and under to raise money for the Deaf Awareness foundation.
“I’m making a variety of brownies for a dollar, Oreo cream treats also selling for a dollar, and peanut butter bats and hats for 50 cents each,” senior Anna Vecchio said. “I’m hoping this carnival will make people more aware of the deaf community, and for some, they will be introduced to the fact that the deaf community even exists.”
