Friday 5 with Coach Green

Parrott: As the second head coach in the schools history, what are your thoughts on the program that Coach Puckett developed and what is it like taking over his roll?

Green: Well number one coach Puckett had done a fantastic job with the program. Obviously the winning in the past speaks for the success that they had, but it goes a lot deeper than that as you look at the kids in the program and how disciplined they were and the work ethic that they boys had. I was very, very fortunate to step in to a job where Coach Puckett had laid a lot of the foundation. And I’m kind of reaping the benefits of that and trying to add on and build on to that.

Parrott: Tonight is the Leopards’ 4A Debut and your debut as coach, what are your goals going in to the game?

Green: I think goal number one is that we win the ball game. Obviously that’s what everybody wants to accomplish but I think that you have to look past that as well and know that there’s going to be some great challenges tonight. I think number one is our kids need to go out there and play hard. Our kids need to carry out the assignments that we’ve asked them to do and we want to see that we’re getting our message across to them, that they understand it, that they’re learning the game plan and that they’re implementing that. So those would be the two goals I think, play hard, play well and win the football game.

Parrott: What do you think will be the Leopards’ biggest strength against The Frisco Heritage Coyotes?

Green: Well I think number one is just the simple fact that we have a good football team. I think our defense tomorrow night is going to be ready to rock n roll. They’ve been working hard all week to stop the run and I think that our defense is built to stop the run. We’re going to make people try to throw the ball on us and so I look forward to the challenge tomorrow night of them running the ball against our defense. I think offensively our tempo; our fast paced, hurry-up, tempo will really help us. We’re going to try to wear them down and it may take a while cause they’re pretty big and physical up front but I think in the end we’re going to wear them down and move the football on them.

Parrott: What is Heritage’s biggest strength?

Green: I think their biggest strength is their run game. They can run the football. Heritage has shown us on film in the games we’ve seen that they can run the football. They’re a power football team and their defense is going to line up right. Their defense is not going to beat themselves, they’re not going to give you anything easy, and you’re going to have to earn what you get. I think those are the two best attributes of their football team.

Parrott: Freshman Bowman Sells has been talked about throughout the hallways more than anyone this past week. What are your thoughts about a freshman getting playtime?

Green: One, right now, Zack’s our starter, Saffle is going to start. I think really we look at more though, rather than it being a quarterback controversy, this is a quarterback compliment. These two guys compliment each other so well and I think that what the community and what our fans and our players understand is that these two guys are working together to win games; not against each other. Zack plays so many positions for us. He’s such a talented football player that the reality is he’s going to get tired. And you know I think Bowman has some strengths that maybe Zack doesn’t have and I know that Zack has some strengths that Bowman doesn’t yet have as a young player. So we’re not looking at this as it’s either Bowman or it’s Zack Saffle. It’s going to be a compliment; these two guys compliment each other very well. They’re both our quarterbacks.
