A family affair: student’s cousin playing in Super Bowl

A family affair: students cousin playing in Super Bowl

Junior Kacy Guajardo’s cousin is Wes Welker, starting wide receiver for the Patriots and will be playing in the Super Bowl.

The Red Ledger: What is it like to be cousins with Wes Welker?

Guajardo: He’s just my cousin, to other people he is a celebrity, but I’ve known him since I was born and before he became famous, so I don’t see him as a celebrity, only as another member of my family.

The Red Ledger: What is he like off the football field?

Guajardo: He’s really down to earth unlike most football players, and really fun to be around.

The Red Ledger: When you watch a game he is playing what goes through your mind?

Guajardo: When I watch a game and he makes a really good play, I just think about how many people have told him he isn’t good enough, and how awesome it is that he’s proved everyone wrong.

The Red Ledger: During the Super Bowl, are you going to be rooting for Wes himself or the Patriots team as a whole?

Guajardo: I’ll be cheering for the whole team, but most importantly for Wes!

The Red Ledger: From your prospective how was his journey from Texas Tech to a Pro Bowl receiver?

Guajardo: All through high school he was told he wasn’t good enough to play in college then he had the opportunity to play in college, and did amazing. Then he was told he was too short, and too slow to play in the NFL, and then he was drafted to play for the Chargers. He is an inspiration to me because everything he’s been through he reached his goal of playing professional football.

The Red Ledger: What do you think of the playoff mustache that he is growing at the moment?

Guajardo: The mustache is gross, but everybody does it. Hopefully he will shave it once they win!
