The silver medals dangle from their ribbons, each one a gleaming testament to a remarkable achievement. Yet, as they shimmer, there’s an underlying note of bittersweetness. Silver, while beautiful and prestigious, will always symbolize how close I came to the top and failed.
Being the second child and second daughter born on the twenty second, two has been an important number in my life. Even when I discovered my niche, track and field, my team placed second at state in the 4×400…two years in a row. And, our team won second place overall…two years in a row. Even after we improved and went to Nike Outdoor Nationals, we were second again. I mean first is the worst, right?
Being second born, I am easy going and consider myself the peacemaker of my family. I work to mediate siblings, always being flexible and sensitive to others’ needs. I am proud to say I am each sibling’s favorite–molding myself to suit them, accentuating my sporty side with my brother and downplaying it with my artsy sister. I am attuned to others’ feelings and avoid confrontation and conflict at all cost. I’ve found that the characteristic of never wanting to step on anyone’s toes makes me the perfect silver medalist.
I’ve recognized the importance of second place. Being second is a huge motivator. Silver is never complacent, always hungry, yet humble. This balance keeps me grounded and less prone to arrogance. It makes me more aware of my own strengths and limitations, fostering a better perspective on my accomplishments. I always have room to grow and something to strive for. Silver has taught me to be a better person.
Without silver, there would be no gold. I am a firm believer in iron sharpening iron. I am more than content with being a person who pushes others to be their very best. By consistently exerting maximum effort, going the extra mile, and pushing myself, I am setting a standard that can inspire others to meet or elevate that team, class, or organization. By not being a winner, I get to be a remarkable teammate, superb collaborator, reliable friend, and the biggest cheerleader. Seeing others succeed is just as rewarding as succeeding myself.
I am driven toward self-improvement and constantly pushing myself to work harder. Finishing second shifts focus from solely winning, to valuing my journey and experiences along the way. I love to chase goals, be an encourager, and strive to be more and more similar to those who are better than myself. As my high school chapter ends, I hope to bring these traits with me in my new college endeavors. Silver leads to a golden future, proving second really is the best.
