On The Spot: Winter storm blackouts

Junior Hunter Knight
“For the first couple days, we didn’t have any power or water. It came to the point where we had power, but no water. We have an all electric house, so we were cooking on our wood-burning fireplace.”
Sophomore Clay Diercks
“It didn’t affect me as bad as most people, but I did have some power outages every once in a while. We had an hour on and an hour off for a few days. It wasn’t as bad as others, but it was still enough to affect my everyday life.”
Homa Lewis, AP Human Geography/ AP European History
“I was very lucky because I didn’t lose power, and I didn’t have any frozen pipes. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do if I did because my mother is 90, and I was afraid I would have to put her on the sled and pull her in the snow. My daughter and her kids came over because they did lose power.”
Sophomore Delaney Leehy
“During the storm, we had power for about 15 minutes at a time, and it would go out for 30 to 45 minutes. It was hard to do things around the house like washing dishes and washing clothes. Our pool froze over, and we couldn’t go out and break up the ice at one point. We had to winterize the pool, and we had some things break in the pool. Our hot water tank froze, so we no longer have hot water....
Sophomore Triniti Guignard
“I was in Colorado, so I wasn’t affected that much. My dad wasn’t able to contact us when he got home, so we were all stressed. Also, our flights kept getting cancelled, so we had to stay in Colorado for almost two weeks and couldn’t go home.”
Freshman Carson Brantl
“I didn’t have power for a while, and it kept going off and on. I was trying to work on some stuff, but it kept going out. It was awful, and I hated it.”
Freshman Avery Fuller
“The power outages didn’t affect me. I think it is because I live right next to the courthouse in McKinney, and they have to have power, so we had power as well.”
Junior Brendan Bruner
“The main thing with the winter storm was that I had a water pipe burst in my garage, and it got all over my cars, which wasn’t fun. I didn’t lose any power, but I didn’t have Wi-Fi throughout the storm, which also wasn’t fun.”
