On The Spot: Day of love
Lily Bouldin, Staff Writer
Feb. 14 is Valentine’s Day, which is celebrated around the world and named after St. Valentine. The day often entails couples exchanging gifts of flowers, chocolate or cards of endearment. Students shared their thoughts on whether the holiday is overrated and their overall opinion about the quality of the day.
Senior Julia Brochu
“I think Valentine’s Day is based on a really awesome idea, but it's definitely overhyped. I believe we should love people everyday, and while valentine’s day provides an opportunity for that, it has turned into a day that just glorifies dating. I believe love is just so much more than ‘romance,’so much more powerful than that. So, I personally would say Valentine’s Day is overrated.”...
Freshman Kate Carlson
“I think Valentine’s Day is somewhat overrated. I never really think much of it. I don’t think it is that much enjoyable because my day doesn’t really change.”
Senior Aaron Johnson
“I think it’s good to celebrate a day showing love and appreciation for your significant other. It’s not overrated to show someone how much you love them because they must mean the world to you. People make jokes about how Valentine’s Day is the worst holiday because it makes you feel alone, but I think for those that have loved ones, it makes it so much more special to celebrate having the...
Junior Molly Martin
“I think Valentine’s Day is so fun. I use it as an excuse to go out and do something fun with my friends. Significant other or not, it’s a fun day to celebrate the people you love.”
Senior Scarlett Terwege
“I think that valentine’s day is a little bit overrated because I am single, but I think if I had a boyfriend it would be super fun. It feels just like a normal day to me though.”
Sophomore Ryder Sullivan
“For the most part, I don’t believe that Valentine's Day is overrated because if you have a valentine, then it's great to celebrate and spend time with each other, and even though sometimes it can be cheesy, I think overall that it is not overrated.”
Junior Dinah Thadikonda
“Although I think it’s a tad bit overrated, I think Valentine’s Day is just a nice day to celebrate your loved ones. Even if you don’t have a significant other or special someone, you can still have a great time spending it amongst friends or loved ones. I enjoy it because I can get tons of candy at a discount price and watch rom-coms all day. I like the positive energy of the holiday.”...
Junior Khloe Litchenburg
“I don’t think Valentine’s is overrated. Even if you are not dating or with someone, it is still a good time to spend with your friends or even family and have fun together. I think the stigma, that you have to be with someone romantically to have fun, is dumb, and it can be your friend or family that you spend the day with. I like the holiday and obviously it has been more fun the years I h...
