Freshmen Andrew Poulton, senior John Armstrong, junior Tate Barr, and senior Trevor Malik run their warm up mile. The track team has their first meet on Feb. 11 at the high school.

Track prepares for competition

The track team will begin their season in the Early-Bird Tri Meet on Feb. 6. The Leopards have been preparing for this season with long runs outside of the school and are ready for competition come February.

“The team has been training in many areas,” coach Carly Littlefield said. “We have been working on our strength in the weightroom, we have been working on our speed through plyos [plyometrics] and short sprints, and we have been working on our stamina and endurance through longer, more challenging training runs. We also have weekly team meetings to discuss our goals, expectations, team culture, and other important topics.”

Coach Littlefield says that the practices are tough, but the team is able to push through workouts and overcome adversity. The team also has more “laid back” practices according to Littlefield, where she allows the team to simply have fun.

“I love coach Littlefield. She always has a positive attitude, and knows exactly what she’s doing and how to work with each individual person and their personality,” sophomore Morgan Streeter said. “She is goal oriented and wants what’s best for us. She knows that we are capable of doing great things on the track even if we don’t believe her sometimes. She works very hard and really shows her love for the sport and all the athletes everyday.”

Although the team lost some seniors from last year, the team made changes by introducing the younger teammates to leadership roles.

“I think the team is very ready for competition,” senior Claire Johnson said. “We’re super excited to compete after our hard work these past few months and our season getting cut off last year.

Coach Littlefield is confident in the team’s chances for success this season.

“We have several strong individuals this year,” Littlefield said. “The key for our team to have success will be how we all come together to perform in our relays, field events, and picking up points in places 3-6.”
