The football team played in its first home scrimmage under the new coaching staff Thursday against the Frisco Centennial Titans.
“The team played well,” junior running back Noah Naidoo said. “The longer the scrimmage went on, the more we got comfortable. [We could work on] the little things like drops, hitting the holes as a running back, and being on time for quarterbacks. I can’t wait for week one.”
Although the scrimmage score was not kept, the team feels they performed well.
“I thought we played really well considering it is our first time playing someone else with our new coaches,” senior safety and receiver Chief Collins said. “I think we play really well together. I think the one thing we can work on is communication on the field.”
Senior outside linebacker Shawn Robertson’s performance stood out to offensive line coach Shawn Lewis.
“Shawn Robertson, an outside linebacker, did a really good job coming off the edge and making plays,” Lewis said. “It was really a great overall team effort just seeing guys having a good time flying around. Of course, you have guys making impact plays, but at the same time those guys could not make the plays without everyone doing their job.”
Before their upcoming game on Friday, the team is looking to focus on playing faster and their communication.
“The big thing with us is that we want to play fast,” Lewis said. “We want to play fast, start fast and finish. We implement that in everything that we do in our drills, our meetings in the weight room, everything we do is setting ourselves up for [the game on] Friday.”
After having their season pushed back, the team’s first game this week will be against John Paul II at home. .
“The game is gonna be physical. It’s gonna be a physical fight,” Lewis said. “John Paul, they’re really good, but we have a good team too. There’s going to be a battle. It is going to be an early test to see what we’re about and to see what they’re about, and it’s going to be exciting.”
