TRL editors choose favorite stories of 2018
Throughout 2018, the staff has posted more than 600 stories. Though we are proud of each of those stories and what the staffers put into them, a few stand out. Each editor has picked five stories from 2018 which they personally connected to as our gift to you this season. Sit back by a fire and enjoy the best content of The Red Ledger this winter season. Check back as more editors’ picks are posted daily leading up to Dec. 25.

“Senior goodbye: Mixed emotions,” Katie Felton Katie’s senior column was really strong about conflicting emotions, and she opened it up so that it was applicable to a lot of people. She wasn’t shy about explaining why she wanted to leave, but she included why she loved it here. Katie emphasized that the people were what mattered, the people close to her were home, not the city. “Colu...

1. “Column: Support the Soles,” Alexis Russell This column was written really well, and I love that Alexis Russell expressed how she felt. The Nike controversy with Colin Kaepernick and his actions on trying to make people aware of the oppression of minorities was such a big deal. When I saw the story go up, I was so happy that Alexis was able to cover the topic and give her opinion. Shae a...

1.“Absolute chaos and terror”, Madeline Sanders Writing a timely story about an event that happened five years ago seems nearly impossible, yet editor-in-chief Madeline Sanders did it. She brought out Coach Carly Littlefield’s story and recollections of the Boston Marathon bombing and turned it into a timeless story that can be read year after year and still have an impact. 2. ...

1. “Braving the shave,” Kelsey Carroll This heartwarming story features Julie Boardman, who volunteered to “brave the shave” and shave her head in support for cancer research. Although Julie wasn’t personally affected by cancer in her family, she wanted to support the cause anyway. I loved the way Kelsey elegantly portrayed the story of Julie’s journey and the message it gives to th...

1. “Column: A Letter," Lily Hager This was one of the most powerful pieces of journalism I have ever read. This story was written in such a tragic time in the Lovejoy community, and for Lily to be able to pen this letter in such a profound manner is truly remarkable. Every day as journalists, it is essential for us to write about the accomplishments of students, teachers, teams and or...

“Taking precautions: Girls cross country team faces constant struggle with harassment” A story that has a very personal connection me, this news feature dug in deep into problems that girl runners face daily with multimedia elements to depict the whole story. “The walking ‘Coop’: Animation teacher celebrates Halloween in his annual fashion” Ray Cooper is a living legend on c...

1. “Senior goodbye: Scream your heart out,” Nick Smith This senior goodbye column by TRL’s former editor-in-chief Nick Smith often comes to my mind. It captured his spirit so clearly, spreading it to the readers. Through this column, he motivated me to live every day with enthusiasm. 2. “A love that serves,” Lily Hager I began investigating this story as a feature on our SRO, but I e...
