Auditions for the school’s a capella group will take place on April 25-26 at 4:30 p.m.

“We’re looking for the people who are really gifted performers,” choir director Cathy Koziatek said. “[People] who have lots of stage presence and sing pop music and classical music well. We expect them to be able to learn music quickly and to work pretty closely together.”

The auditions will be run by Koziatek and assistant choir director Kelly D’Souza in addition to a few outside judges from other school districts.

“We’re trying to get the students that are the most versatile musicians,” D’Souza said. “It’s so exciting because sometimes people who you don’t really get to hear from in class can showcase their talents. It’s such a wonderful way that we can hear them individualize.”

The a capella group currently has 18 members, four of which are juniors that are automatically admitted for next year’s class. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are all allowed to audition.

“Our a capella group is primarily our PR group,” Koziatek said. “They go out in the community and they sing because it’s easier to take 18 people than to take our choir of 80.”

Auditioning students prepare both a classic and modern piece for their auditions and sight read for callbacks, which will be held on Friday, April 27.

“It’s a lot of fun,” senior Raegan Vaughn said. “I feel like I’ve made a lot of friendships. At the same time, I’ve seen all of us grow together. A capella is the lead choir, and in my freshman year, I really looked up to kids in a capella.”
