School to host annual percussion concert
March 7, 2018
The school will host the ninth annual percussion concert on Wednesday, March 7, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. The performance will feature student musicians from sixth grade up to 12th grade.
Practice for the pieces began on the first day of the second semester, Jan. 8, and was practiced before school as well as every day in class four days a week. The band will play some drumline music, as well as concert percussion ensembles, which are themed pieces featuring a small group of students.
“We’ve been having percussion concerts as long as I’ve been here,” percussion director Nathan Lewis said. “We’re giving them a chance to meet each other and realize that there’s a little family– that they all have something in common.”
Admission is free and student attendance is encouraged.
“It’s really neat,” Lewis said. “It gives us a lot of camaraderie and cohesion, and it builds comradery between the different schools. It’s another avenue for them to learn and to perform in front of an audience.”
The percussion team will submit recordings of the pieces for review by contests like the Foundation for Music Education and the Percussive Arts Society.
