On The Spot: Armed teachers
Austin Keefer, Staff Writer
The recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida has sparked a nationwide debate about what can be done to prevent and stop school shootings in the future. A measure that has gained significant attention is arming teachers so they can protect students in the event of a shooting. Would high school teachers be supportive of this measure?

I don’t feel like that’s a good solution to the problem. I think that teachers have enough responsibilities and that logistics of actually concealing a weapon or having one in the classroom could potentially lead to more problems. ---- I would say no.

I have a problem with the being to throw more guns into the mix, and so I would be against that. I don’t think that’s the solution that we need. I think it’s asking too much of teachers to be armed in the classroom. ---- I would probably say no.

It’s a tough question. There are probably teachers that have maybe some mental instabilities who we wouldn’t want carrying guns. So we would have to continue pushing for background checks and things of that nature that everyone’s already talking about anyway. I really don’t think that that is a wise idea. I have a hard enough time keeping up with grading and books without having to worry about a weapon in the school or a weapon in my possession. I also think it's better to arm teachers with the things we need to effectively teach students; school funding, books, textbooks, additional staff, materials, all of that would be better to arm me with. --- N...

I think it’s a really bad idea, only because I don’t know how teachers would respond in a crisis situation. I know personally how to handle a gun, but I don’t think I’d feel comfortable having that here on campus because if that were to happen, I don’t think my first reaction would be to arm myself, it would be to protect students. ---- I would not want to. I think I could handle it, but ...
