Boys basketball hopes to build momentum in second half of district
Currently in the playoff hunt, the boys basketball team (12-8, 5-3) hopes to cement its status as a top four team in the district behind Highland Park, West Mesquite, and North Forney. The team will host Wylie East tonight at 7 p.m.
“Attention to detail is key, little things add up to big things,” head coach Kyle Herrema said. “[Whether] it be coming off a screen shoulder to shoulder or knowing what direction the player you are guarding likes to drive. An avalanche starts small and builds into something big, we want all the little things to build into district and playoff wins.”
Last Friday the team lost to West Mesquite 44-37. They fell behind early, but came out after halftime on a roll. Ultimately the team couldn’t capitalize off of their early momentum in the second half.
“We had a rough start to the game in the first half,” senior Garrett Mcmanaman said. “We had too many turnovers and we didn’t shoot the ball very well at first. We need to get better at limiting turnovers and offensive rebounds for the opposing team.”
Starting the second round of district play, the team traveled to Forney to take on the Jackrabbits on Tuesday. They left with a 51-45 victory, and Braden Ledebur led the team in scoring with 19 points.
“We controlled the tempo very well throughout the whole game, and we stuck to our gameplan and executed perfectly,” senior Jackson Carswell said. “For the rest of district we need to stay focused and just take each game one at a time.”
