Baseball looks to return to winning ways
April 1, 2016
After many days of competing in tournaments, the baseball team is hoping to snap an eight-game losing streak at Denison (5-10 overall, 0-5 in district) on Friday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, the Leopards lost a close 4-3 game to McKinney High School, bringing the team’s record to 10-11-1. Head coach Jason Wilson says he felt comfortable with Tuesday’s game, but there were still mistakes being made.
“We had better approaches and hit the ball hard,” Wilson said. “Unfortunately, we hit a lot of balls right at people.”
Although hitting is a big focus right now, Wilson said pitching is something the team needs to also work on.
“Pitchers have to eliminate walks and hit batters,” Wilson added. “Too many free bases (have been) given to other teams.”
In Tuesday’s game, the Leopards scored all three runs with solo homers. Senior Andrew Keefer ended with three hits, including a double and a home run. On the season, Keefer has 36 hits and a batting average of .516. Seniors Bailey Bennett and CJ Vogel also homered in the game.
Keefer added insight on what he thinks the team is doing well, and what the team needs to improve on.
“The team and I could both work on improving at our bats, laying off pitches, and making the opposing pitcher work harder for outs,” Keefer said. “We are trying to get back to normal so we can make playoffs.”
