On the Spot: Students and faculty comment on the Oscars

“I completely agree with that statement. I think they’ve always been too white. I tend to watch the Oscars every year, and I haven’t seen any African American or any LGBTQA+ representatives receive very many awards. Being apart of the LGBTQA+ society, it’s kind of hurtful that we don’t get recognized as much as all the male, white actors do because we have just as much talent.”...

“I don’t really like that quote that much because it’s not that true. [The nominees] are pretty diverse for the most part.”

“I think it is true that the vast majority of people who get nominated for Oscars, and usually win them, are white, but I think it’s difficult to determine why that is. Is because there’s bias in the system? It’s hard to prove that. I would like to see a little more diversity, but again it’s hard to say definitively there’s bias in the system.”

“I think that [the people choosing the nominees] chose people based on who they thought would be best in acting. I don’t think it had anything to do with race.”

“I think it’s more of movie makers’ faults because usually it’s more common to see white people star in movies than it is to see [people of other races].”
