A jump start in fashion
Senior stays updated on latest trends through internship
November 5, 2015
The lights and flashes of the glamorous catwalk at New York fashion week shine in front of fashion designer Sierra Maynes.
Well, maybe not just yet. But the senior has taken on an internship with “The Bag Snob,” aka Tina Craig, Founder/Chief Editor of Snob Global Media.
“We started off with me just FedExing a bunch of Prada bags and jewelry back to New York for her,” Maynes said. “Not very glamorous; just taking boxes to FedEx.”
Maynes’ involvement increased as she continued working for Craig.
“Then I helped her out with a photoshoot where I got to actually wear designer name dresses and photographers came and took pictures of me in them which are gonna be posted on her website and in Vogue China,” Maynes said. “She already posted some pictures from the photoshoot of just her, and I’m listed as her assistant.”
Craig has found that having Maynes around to help has made her work easier and more effective.
“She just started and assisted on a recent photo shoot for Vogue China,” Craig said. “It was definitely more timely and efficient having an extra pair of hands. She is also assisting with @SnobEssentials Instagram account.”
Her new responsibilities as part of the Bag Snob team have given her a basis for future work in the fashion industry.
“I’m really looking forward to doing more photoshoots and getting to meet more people through her and getting the experience because it’s really awesome,” Maynes said.
Maynes’ boyfriend, senior James Reyna, sees this opportunity as a benefit to her, as it will give her a head start on her career.
“I know her independent study is about fashion design, and I bet this is really helpful for all of that,” Reyna said.
Craig knows Maynes has a potential that could lead her to great accomplishments in the future.
“She’s driven and eager to learn,” Craig said. “That’s always a great quality. She is interested in fashion design and I will be introducing her to local designers who may teach her more about design and sewing.”
Reyna wants Maynes to enjoy her internship as it is good opportunity to pursue her interests and a new field of study.
“I think it’s really cool that Sierra gets to do this,” Reyna said. “She loves fashion, so this is definitely something she loves doing.”
Craig said her experience with interns has been an effective way for her to share her business ventures and experience.
“I think it’s important to mentor high school students and have done so in the past,” Craig said. “It allows them to learn practical skills and gain experience in the business place before college which I believe helps with admissions.”
Maynes said she has really enjoyed the opportunity of not just experiencing professional fashion marketing, but also getting to work with the successful Craig.
“She is both a mom and a business woman and that’s really inspiring,” Maynes said. “She travels a lot and her life is really glamorous, but at home her life is really carefree and down to earth, so I like that about her.”
