The art of forgetfulness
April 23, 2015
Forgetting to do or say something is completely normal. Not remembering where you put your socks or your homework is actually not as uncommon as you think.
Even though it may not seem like it, most people who often lack the skill of remembering usually seem to have a method to their madness. Although this person’s organization skills look like a mess to those with more simplistic lives, I guarantee you they can find a pencil in their jumbled mess just as quickly as another person takes one from a neatly labeled drawer labeled “pencils.”
In fact I quite frankly forgot what my topic was going to be for this column. I even specifically knew that I would forget this idea if I didn’t write it down, so I grabbed the nearest pencil and wrote it on my wall (because there was no paper near obviously). The only problem with this is that I forgot which wall I wrote on, and where on that specific wall.
Unfortunately, I too, have a extremely short attention-span, which usually ends up in me forgetting to do something, or misplacing things. My bedroom floor is constantly covered with miscellaneous objects, from a tennis racket to Mexican pesos scattered on the ground, it’s all there. The crazy thing about having a messy room is that I feel more organized when it’s not picked up, and ironically, I find it easier to find the item that I am looking for when my room is a mess. Coincidentally, I clean my room about once a week (or sometimes even more), but after I clean my room, I can’t find anything that I am looking for, so I tear through my room in search of a ponytail holder, creating a mess in my room, thus beginning the insane cycle of forgetfulness.
When I get up, the struggle is quite real when I realize that I somehow managed to misplace my toothpaste, hairbrush, and sometimes even my backpack. Of course there are obvious and simple solutions that could be used to solve this problem of forgetfulness, but from the standpoint of one who quite often struggles with forgetting, it isn’t as easy as it seems to change your ways.
So if you are one that often battles with remembering items or thoughts, please know that I am not here to criticize you because there is a huge chance that I am just as bad. Everybody forgets something eventually, so I promise you are not a lost soul (that’s a pun). Just hang in there buddy.
