The benefits of thrift shopping
April 6, 2015
Out of the countless number of stores I have shopped at in my life, my prime choice would have to be the thrift shop. Never have I been in a store with so much variety in style, fashion, and size, while all staying in my broke-teenage-girl budget I have to incorporate.
What is so bad about wearing a t-shirt that some person wore before you? Are you afraid that someone might recognize the shirt as their old next door neighbor’s or something? Because if this is the reason, I just want to tell you now, that’s not a good reason.
It’s no surprise that I am a high schooler and I’m guessing if you are anything like me, you are dirt broke. I don’t have a steady source of income, in fact, I don’t even have a job. I get an allowance each month, but that’s already gone within the first few days of receiving it.
I have an extreme problem of buying things in an impulsive manner whether it’s food or weird trinkets on the internet. Saving money, of any amount has never been a strong quality of mine. Just like any girl, if I spot a pair of shoes that I absolutely believe I cannot live without, I will, with no regret, buy them on the spot. Of course, the inevitable amount of guilt will soon follow, after I begin to realize that neither the shoes, nor the cost, are reasonable. However, having an impulsive buy at a thrift shop results in less guilt later, knowing that you only spent $.99 rather than $50 for the same item new.
While some might find it embarrassing to wear refurbished clothing, I find it quite awesome. I love obtaining mass amounts of clothing, not because i’m a fashionista, (or whatever the correct term is) but because I like having options. Also, I do not like doing laundry, so it gives me more time to procrastinate for a few more weeks.
Sure, the clothing options at a thrift shop may not have the trendiest selection, but through some persistent and dedicated searches, or maybe even a pair scissors and a tie dye kit, there can be some pretty awesome finds.
The clothes that I have bought from the thrift shop are quite honestly my favorite things to wear. There is nothing like wearing an extremely soft, and comfy shirt all day. And if you still think it’s lame, then you are missing out. Clothes are clothes.
