Though the rink is chilly, the Leopard hockey team has been heating things up all season with a 16-4 record heading into the playoffs on Sunday against Coppell in Farmers Branch at 7:45 p.m.

The team is composed of players from both the middle school and high school.

“We’re pretty good,” freshman Logan Casteele said. “We’re going for state. If we win league, we go to state and if we win state we go to nationals.”

Though many of the players have been participating in club hockey teams since they were little, other players are new to the team and eager to learn.

“We’ve welcomed in a lot of new players, and it has been really nice to see them all find a place on the team and grow,” junior Michael Kline said.

Even with the influx of new players, the hockey team is struggling to increase their status in the high school hockey world. Even with the middle school hockey players involve, the team still doesn’t have enough players to make the team varsity.

“We don’t have enough kids to make a varsity team,” Casteele said. “It’s not like we’re not able to play varsity. We’ve played many varsity teams. It’s just that we don’t have enough kids.”

While hockey isn’t a UIL sport, the program is having one of the school’s most successful seasons this year.

“Although we are the least known sports team of the district, we have a chance to make our own unique history here,” Kline said.

In the past, the hockey team has had three chances at bringing home a trophy, but always came up short. Although they haven’t won in the past, this years team is optimistic for success.

“This year we have a lot more positive momentum,” Kline said. “I am confident that we can pull off the win and not fall prey to chance.”
