Cheer signs gone wrong

Walking through the school, colorful signs are often seen lining the hallways in support of sports teams playing every week. Cheerleaders have always made these signs, however this year, there seem to be more than ever before.

“Last year we just never did it as well as we did this year,” junior cheerleader Baylen Roundtree said. “This year we are actually consistent, but last year we were supposed to do it but no one did. We will spend about 25 minutes of practice making signs. They will tell us what teams are playing and to make signs for them and you can just make whatever you want and we go hang them up in the halls.”

Some of the signs, however, have had to be taken down by administration due to inappropriate content.

“Some of the signs are bad and have to be taken down,” Roundtree said. “We have had three that have had to be taken down so far, one was ‘neuter the bulldogs’ and recently the other day we had to take down the sign that said ‘we have balls.’”

While virtually all signs have to be approved by administration before they are posted, this isn’t the case with those made by cheerleaders.

“Our cheerleading sponsor is the one who approves those, who works with students, who does things,” principal Chris Mayfield said. “We do have those signs on the bulletin boards that have to be approved, through us, but sometimes we do have some students with some random things they want to put up and they’ll do that without coming to the office, but obviously they’re supposed to have them approved.”

The recent posting of inappropriate posters has led to a new procedure with cheer coaches beginning to check the signs on Mondays before they go up.

“We make them every Monday for games coming up,” cheer coach Jennifer Leary said. “Administration doesn’t [check the signs], but we are going to make it a point from now on for one of the coaches to check it before they go up.”
