Coach Q&A: Greg Fisher
December 5, 2014
World geography teacher and head swimming coach Greg Fisher is in his 7th year with the school and sat down with The Red Ledger’s Katie Curry who got to know him better in the following Q&A:
The Red Ledger: How long have you been a swimming coach?
Fisher: “This is my 7th year at Lovejoy and my 25th year as a swimming coach. I’ve been at Plano West, I was at Southlake Carroll, I coached in California for a couple of years, I coached at Richland High School (my first coaching job), and also in Angleton High School down in the Houston area so I’ve been all over the place.”
The Red Ledger: What sports did you play in high school?
Fisher: “I swam and ran track and cross country. I actually went and ran cross country and track in college at Baylor.”
The Red Ledger: What is your favorite swimming stroke and why?
Fisher: “Well my personal best was long distance freestyle stuff but I really enjoy coaching butterfly because I think it is the most fun to coach.”
The Red Ledger: What is the best condition for the pool to be in for a swimmer?
Fisher: “Well the water should be kind of cold, colder than what most people would think would be comfortable to swim in because that allows you to swim faster and further. The pool should actually be kind of deep because then its not as wavy when you’re swimming, making you swim faster.”
The Red Ledger: What is your favorite season and why?
Fisher: “My favorite season is summer, I just like being outside in the summer.”
The Red Ledger: What is something no one knows about you?
Fisher: “I was struck by lightning once. I was just out running one day and got struck by lightning when I was out. It knocked me unconscious for a few minutes and then I got up and walked the rest of the way home.”
The Red Ledger: What do you enjoy doing outside of school?
Fisher: “I enjoy running and I still do triathlons which is kind of my out of school hobby. And I also enjoy traveling, I like going all over the world and seeing different places.”
