Whether it’s somebody who wants a career in movies, or simply loves the cinema, the school’s film club is going strong. Led by junior Stephen Johnson and sponsored by animation teacher Ray Cooper, the crew is working on its first project of the year.

“Right now we’re working on a Spider-Man film where Patrick Compton is the director,” Johnson said.

Compton got the script to Sensational Spiderman and decided to have the film club make use of it.

“I’m the director of it and I got the film club to help,” Compton said. “We held a casting session and are doing read throughs.”

This provides a unique experience for the students involved.

“It’s kinda like that hands on experience, there are people that are in charge of different facets of the film,” Cooper said.

It’s a different environment than students previously experienced in the film club.

“Last year it was really me driven and it was wearing me out and I think there were times too that they were worn out by it,” Cooper said.

Cooper has observed a change in student satisfaction with the club once the students were able to take control.

“Really all I’m doing is providing the space,” Cooper said. “Now that it’s student driven I think they’re getting more out of it.”

Compton’s Spider-Man project is just the start for the film club as they have high expectations for the school year.

“This year we’re trying to push out maybe two or three movies,” Johnson said. “A couple of short films and then a couple of sketches.”
