October 28, 2014
Early mornings are a splash for the swim team as they wake up and begin training long before most students get out of bed.
The Red Ledger’s Darby Blaylock caught up with senior Drew Carson as he seeks a return trip to state.
The Red Ledger: How is the swim season going?
Carson: “We have had 3 meets so far, they haven’t been really big meets but it seems like we have a pretty good team. We’ve had one invitational which is a ton of teams go to it then we’ve had 2 dual meets where it’s just two teams.”
The Red Ledger: How often do you practice and where?
Carson: “We practice every single morning from 6:45-8:45 a.m. at Oak Point by Quad-C’s campus.”
The Red Ledger: How many more meets left are there?
Carson: “The season pretty much starts at the beginning of school, to mid February and ends with the state meet. We have one meet Tuesday night.”
The Red Ledger: How do you think you will do in these next upcoming meets?
Carson: “So the one that’s coming up tonight is against McKinney North, which is our biggest rival in our district. So we are gonna see if we can beat them. This year the boys and girls should be able to win the distinct. The only thing in our way is McKinney North.”
The Red Ledger: What events do you partake in?
Carson: “My main 2 events are individual events are the 200 yard freestyle and the 100 yard butterfly.”
The Red Ledger: What is your best time?
Carson: “My best time for the freestyle is 1:44 and my best time for the ‘fly is 1 something.”
The Red Ledger: How many people are on the swim team?
Carson: “I think like 50”
The Red Ledger: What kind of training do swimmers do?
Carson: “We run and do weights twice a week for off-season. It’s kind of well rounded.”
