With songs from Foster the People to Fitz and The Tantrums appearing in commercials in recent years, alternative music is as mainstream as it’s ever been. The next band poised for a breakout: alt-J. They made a splash with their first and quite impressive album, An Awesome Wave, and continue to create beautiful works of art.

Their new album, This Is All Yours (released Tuesday), features colorful, yet haunting indie rock tracks and eerie and stunning slower songs that are beautifully crafted with something for everyone and every mood.

The album starts with “Intro”. To most listeners this title also means “Skip Track”, but that would be such a shame with this interesting capella like opening into the album. Though the “Intro” is not an easy listen, it’s interestingly written and worth checking out. The second track on the album “Arrival In Nara”, directly constricts the harsh aggressiveness of the intro.

Prominent tracks include the heavily indie sound of “Left Hand Free” that slightly resembles Blue Keys of “Every Other Freckle”. That one resemblance aside, the rest of the album is uniquely alt-J. “Hunger of the Pine” is more electronic than the rest of the songs on the album, but has a very exclusive composition between the crescendoing beginnings into a more steady beat.

Once you get past the energetic or uniquely bizarre sounding tracks of the album, you get to hear incredibly hauntingly striking tracks such as “Choice Kingdom” and “Nara”. Though all those tracks are beautiful, “Warm Foothills” takes the cake with it’s hollow and chilling sonorousness.

This Is All Yours isn’t an album you can listen to while doing homework or talking with friends. alt-j has crafted a stunningly artistic album that draws the listener in and captivate them with it’s complex composition. alt-J’s tracks are all impressively exclusive to their band and is definitely worth it to listen.
