Here’s looking at you, kid: a film critic’s farewell

Doug Laman, Movie Critic

“How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard”- Winnie the Pooh

I’ve always loved movies. That much is pretty apparent if one were to even take a quick glance at my profile on this site. But I never would have guessed how deep my passion for cinema was if I hadn’t been given the opportunity to write for this great website. Over the past two years, I’ve done 167 reviews, for movies good (oh Her!) and bad (oh God’s Not Dead!)

I never would have guessed I’d do that much work. And I never would have guessed I could have this much pride over something I have accomplished.

First off, I wanna thank all the editors here at The Red Ledger, for putting up with all my craziness over the years. They’ve likely read more about Marvel and Wes Anderson than ever wanted to. But I have a feeling they, like me, wouldn’t change a thing. A hearty amount of gratitude also goes out to the agencies that have permitted me to attend advanced screenings of many movies. Giving me such an esteemed privilege is truly appreciated and I do hope you know how much that means to me.

And Higgins. Mr. Higgins. You and me have the same passionate drive to create the best content for people, no matter how taxing it may be. Thanks for giving me, some crazy film nerd, the chance to give me opportunity to do what I love and to discover what I want to do. Writing about film is my calling, it’s a task I never could have figured out, if it weren’t for this wonderful online newspaper.

So is this the end for me? Not at all. I’ve got a website now where I’ll be putting up daily content in addition to regular movie reviews. I’m sure I’ll do many great and groundbreaking things over there, but I doubt I’ll be as proud of it as I am of all the work I’ve done here.

Speaking of which, the final person I must thank for that work, is you. Yes, you, dear reader, thank you for reading my rambles, reviews and thoughts. The opinions you guys have given me on my writing have been one of the best parts of this job and I truly will miss it. I hope, if anything, my reviews have helped you to see the world of film as an entire world of artistry and nuance. It’s a land built on imagination and ruled by the desire to bring wonders to people. Maybe my ability to reexamine the intricacies of film has also given you the hope to reevaluate things in your daily life and see the hidden beauty within all that surrounds you. Whether it’s films, sports, or academics; look deeper, you just may appreciate how great everything around truly is

Well, that’s it for me. Thanks guys for the great two years! I promise, the best has yet to come! Excelsior!
