As part of a philanthropy project, coach Ryan Cox’s health classes are putting on a health and wellness expo in conjunction with student council’s blood drive Friday in the auxiliary gym.

“What we’re doing is, for our philanthropy project in health and to meet one of the criteria of the graduate profile (being active in community service,) my three health classes are doing a healthiness expo,” Cox said. “We will have booths set up during lunch, in the cafeteria and commons area. The booths have a wide range of health topics; they go from any of the camps that are offered this summer to cross fit or healthy eating habits and music.”

With a variety of health issues come a variety of booths.  Each booth relates to a different health topic. Some students decided to go for the more serious topics like smoking and drinking.

“I’m doing an anti smoking booth which will display the disadvantages of smoking and alternatives and how to help stop it,” freshman Elizabeth Higgins said. “There will be a game where you will blow through coffee straws which simulates how you can’t breathe when you’re smoking.”

Others chose simpler topics like fitness or nutrition.

“My booth is about promoting a healthy lifestyle. There will be health tips and fitness tips,” freshman Alex Droge said. “And it will have a list of ways that you can stay active this summer.”

A few students are giving food to show that eating can be good if kept at a moderate level.

“I chose a healthy recipes booth and its purpose is to give out healthy foods rather than foods with a lot of bad ingredients in them,” freshman Avery Cordina said. “There will be modified recipes of desserts and foods with a lot of calories, the recipes will still make great tasting food but, it will be healthier.”

Of course fitness can’t be left out as many booths will have games at them which will require physical activity.

“Tennis camp will have a booth set up where they will be playing wii tennis,” Cox said. “We will have booths set up in the courtyard with water balloon toss, basketball.”

There will also be signup sheets for some new clubs and existing ones.

“We [are] starting a SADD group (students against drunk driving), and there will be sign up for that along with the Lovejoy fun run this Saturday.” Cox said.

Even though the booths differ in topic there is still one common theme: health.

“Really what we’re doing is we’re trying to get people to understand that there are many options to stay active and healthy this summer,” Cox said. “And that promoting a healthy lifestyle is an ongoing process.”
