Math teacher by day, event worker by night and weekend

She teaches math during the day, but at night and on the weekends, Lindsay Weaver works at special events and concerts around the community, such as the Edgefest music festival taking place at Toyota Stadium on Saturday, April 26.

The majority of teachers go to work, teach, and go home; repeating those steps five days a week during the school year. For one math teacher, going home in the evening was not enough.

About a year ago, math teacher Lindsay Weaver started working some not so normal jobs during her spare time.

“I started working odd jobs about a year ago,” Weaver said. “I got into it through my mom, because she kinda works odd jobs too. Once you start one, you kind of get to know people and you get hired for more. It just kinda happens. Now I get calls for things people want me to work because they know me.”

By odd jobs, Weaver means mostly working backstage at concerts or helping out at different events around Dallas and the community.

“Sometimes on the weekend I’ll work a soccer game at the FC Dallas stadium, or things like Edgefest, or I’ll go work the Jimmy Buffet concert,” Weaver said. “Then I’ll come here and work the SAT, then I’ll go work a track meet. So I just work lots of random things at night, I guess. [A] Robin Thicke [concert] was probably one of the weirdest things I’ve worked so far.”

Those who work with Weaver, along with students, think it’s neat as well.

“I think it’s cool that she has the opportunity to sell tickets and sometimes she gets backstage passes,” Algebra II teacher Deneen Christian said. “It’s a fun thing for a young teacher to go do.”

“I think [getting to work concerts] would be an awesome job to have,” sophomore Anisa Valentine said. “You’d probably also get to meet famous people, too.”

Despite it being cool, some people wouldn’t have an interest in doing such jobs.

“I probably would’ve enjoyed it when I was younger,” Christian said. “Now I wouldn’t really want to do something like that.”

Weaver enjoys working the jobs and getting unique experiences.

“I like that it’s usually something interesting and that I’m getting paid to do it,” Weaver said. “It’s not usually a hard job. It’s just something I can go do, and make 50 bucks or whatever also. I am also in grad school, so I do a lot of stuff. I’m very busy.”

Once school is out, Weaver plans on working more jobs this summer.

“[I got] asked to work some [more] concerts,” Weaver said. “I’m working Edgefest this month and then I’m going to be working a couple this summer, and they are pretty big concerts.”

Because of all the concerts she has worked, Weaver has met many different famous  and fascinating people.

“Working at concerts I get to meet interesting people,” Weaver said. “I got to meet Robin Thicke and hang out with him for a couple hours one time. [Working odd jobs] is just fun and it keeps things interesting.”
