Relay for life revamped
March 11, 2014
From purple flyers to pies in the face, the Relay For Life committee has made an impression on campus as they’ve been actively spreading the word about this year’s event which starts at 6 p.m. on April 11 and ends at 6 a.m. on April 12.
While it is only the school’s second year to host Relay For Life, this year’s event will have a major difference as it will take place outside on the track, rather than inside the indoor facility. However, the location isn’t the only factor that could cause some hype; this year’s activities schedule is being revamped to include numerous opportunities for participant engagement and interaction.
“[The event] was super fun last year and I had so much fun, even though I was completely exhausted after,” sophomore Jaclyn Willis said. “I’m expecting it to be just as fun or even more so I’m extremely excited.”
One of the new activities on the event schedule is a singing competition called “Relay Idol.” Like “American Idol,” this is a competition of singing ability and can be a solo or group effort. For all participants there will be a $10 registration fee and groups can have up to 7 people. For exceptions to the group size and more informations contact [email protected].
Those who went to the campus’ Relay For Life event last year are familiar with the “Mr. Relay” pageant in which males compete and show themselves off in various activities for the crown. Males of all ages can participate in Mr. Relay, and the registration fee is $5 two weeks before the event, $7 the week of, and $10 on the night of.
Another addition this year is a co-ed flag football tournament. Four girls and three boys are required to sign up with a team registration fee of $15. There will be refs for the games to be fair and a bracket will be made and posted the night of the event.
For all three of these activities there will be a table set up during lunches with the information and opportunity to sign up. Participants must be registered for the event before signing up to participate in one of the activities. To sign up visit www.relayforlife.org/LovejoyHStx.
