20 songs for couples
February 13, 2014
You’ve snagged the perfect outfit, perfect dinner and perfect date for a fantastic Valentine’s Day, but you forgot the most important thing the music. No worries. The Red Ledger is here to help put together a magical playlist of 20 perfect songs that fit any couple. You’re welcome.
20. “First Date” -Blink-182
Is Valentine’s Day your first date? How sweet! Let Blink-182 guide you into it with an energetic and upbeat song about new love. Plus you really can’t ever go wrong with Blink-182.
19. “The Girl” -City and Colour
One of the most popular songs by a Canadian singer/songwriter that gives John Mayer a run for his money. An adorable serenade that is simple and comforting.
18. “You and I” -Ingrid Michaelson
Another simplistic little song that is so easy to swoon for. Michaelson makes all couples blush a little more with this sweet, feel good track. If you really want to surprise your special someone, buy them tickets to Michaelson’s concert on May 13 at House of Blues.
17. “The Heart of Life” -John Mayer
I usually don’t like to give out my little secrets, but this is my absolute, all time favorite song. With lovely lyrics and an optimistic tune, this song will win over your other half.
16. “Lovers’ Eyes” -Mumford & Sons
The most cliche of the bunch, but definitely worth putting on the list. Basically you can’t go wrong with Mumford & Sons.
15. “I Always Knew” -The Vaccines
The Vaccines have slowly been growing into the music scene. A faster paced, indie sound with carefree lyrics that will certainly make you want to get up and dance.
14. “Hi, Hey There, Hello” -The Mowgli’s
Wake up to this song on Valentine’s Day and start your day off with a smile. An adorable, back and forth duet that will brighten your day before it even begins.
13. “Let Your Heart Hold Fast” -Fort Atlantic
Not a well known musician, but well worth the listen. Romantic and uplifting that’s emotionally charged in a light and optimistic way.
12. “L-O-V-E” -Nat King Cole
A romantic classic. A popular song that underscores nearly every 90’s romance movie scene in the book, try letting this song underscore your Valentine’s Day.
11. “Ours” -Taylor Swift
You can’t make a love song list without a dash of Taylor Swift. Queen of the relationship roller-coaster, Swift overcomes bully, hardships and complicated love through this song.
10. “You Make My Dreams” -Hall & Oates
Another one of my all time favorite, Hall & Oates fit a certain kind of couple. If you are quirky (a.k.a awesome) and want to give this throwback duo a try, you are certain to make your Valentine’s Day a lot more lively and a heck of a lot more fun.
9. “Dear Marie” -John Mayer
Mayer makes the list again with his sweet love ballad to the girl he used to love when he was fifteen. Here you go freshmen. A song just for you.
8. “Gone, Gone, Gone” -Phillip Phillips
This demure singer/songwriter took off with his song “Home”, and came back for more with this heartfelt track about sticking by someone’s side through thick and thin. It doesn’t always happen, but we can certainly dream.
7. “I’m Yours” -Jason Mraz
This song may be over used, over played and for some reason it’s the only song anyone can play on the ukulele, but there’s a reason for the popularity. Mraz encompasses the best parts of a hit romantic tune: cute lyrics, a light voice and an indie ukulele.
6. “Lovesong” -The Cure
Covered by many different alternative bands, The Cure’s only top ten entry on Billboard Hot 100 will surely get you in a Valentine’s Day mood.
5. “Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” -Aerosmith
Classic band, classic song. Aerosmith’s specialty isn’t exactly swoon worthy love songs, but this track is a sweet guilty pleasure to add to your playlist.
4. “Save Love” -Macklemore and Ryan Lewis
The ultimate modern day love song about equality and the real meaning of love. This duo swept the Grammy’s and will surely find it’s way into your heart.
3. “Accidentally in Love” -Counting Crows
Not only is this song super catchy, but it’s a feel good track by a 90’s alternative band with a fun loving sound.
2. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” -Deep Blue Something
This band emerged from North Texas and made a splash with their song “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” about finding for love, and finding reasons to stick together.
1. “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” -The Script
A song about doing anything to see the person you love again. The Script went Platinum with their second single, and for good reason. “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” tells a story about undeniable love. Though things may not always be good, love is pushing through the storm.
*Songs are ranked in no particular order and may affect a couple’s happiness level differently depending on (but not limited to) genre of music, number of times the artist says the word “love” and the use of a ukulele*

Same Love shouldn’t be on this list. It’s about gay rights. Unless there’s a gay couple at our school that nobody knows about then this song should be taken off this list.
