Thursday is the new Friday
November 5, 2013
Instead of spending a Friday night at the school because of tardies or undocumented absences, students will instead be spending a Thursday night at the school in a cost-saving measure.
“The whole state of Texas but also Lovejoy ISD, budget wise, has access to less money,” assistant principal Bruce Coachman said. “A lot of our programs we look to where we can cut some funding so we can put money other ways.”
Because of the limited budget, changes had to be made in the days that students can serve consequences.
“We eliminated Monday before and after school and we eliminated Friday before and after school and so then we just have Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and just pushed Friday night school to Thursday night school,” Coachman said.
The decision was not only made because of the limited budget however, the administration also believes that there will be better attendance on Thursday nights.
“Friday night typically is not a good night for students to stay at school and so what ends up happening is they just don’t go and there’s other consequences that you have to use,” Coachman said. “We have found that Thursday night is more convenient for our students to be able to serve their consequences, and that’s another reason.”
Student’s are glad with the change.
“It’s good they changed it because more people would show up on Thursdays since on Fridays most people work or have plans,” junior Christy Gonzales said.
Although the change is better for students, it’s still a hassle.
“I think Thursday is a lot better than Friday because Friday after school everyone is leaving the high school faster than a lion attacking its prey,” junior Morgan Almy said. “Either day, it’s being at school later than usual.”
