The Oscar Run is a weekly feature discussing how the Oscar race is shaping up. This week, The Oscar Run looks at how The Wolf of Wall Street might be a major force in the Oscar race, and a major new addition to the Best Picture race.

It’s unreal how many great looking movies will be arriving between now and New Year’s Day. I’ve already written about what movies I’m looking forward to over the course of the next couple of months, but a new trailer for The Wolf of Wall Street is making me reevaluate my opinions. Seriously, this is one fantastic trailer, one that shows off the perfect screenwriting and acting Martin Scorsese is about to deliver to the moviegoing population come Christmas Day.

With more footage to analyze, I’m not only positive the film will be in the Best Picture race as before, but I’m wondering if it can break into the acting field as well. While Jonah Hill feels a surefire nomination thanks to how weak the Best Supporting Actor category is this year, the Best Actor competition might be just a bit too strong for Leonardo DiCaprio to overcome. Still, watch out for this one, as it’ll doubtlessly be around in the Oscar conversation.

Now, after looking at all those movies coming out soon, I realized something; I was putting too few movies up for consideration for Best Picture. While the past two years had 9 films up for Best Picture at the Oscar, I feel this year has been superb for cinema at large and should be recognized for such by increasing the total nominees slightly to 10. Looking over what to add, I decided to add in one of my favorite films from this year: Before Midnight. I actually foresee this 10th nominee changing constantly, but for now, I’ll put that film down along with 8 of the 9 films I’ve previously discussed (I’ve also traded The Secret Life of Walter Mitty for Blue Jasmine).
