Dakota Michaels steps up as starting quarter back
October 11, 2013
Late in the second half of the second varsity football game, starting quarterback, sophomore Bowman Sells, went down with a collarbone injury.
Sells had a minor break in his right collarbone, rendering him unable to play for sometime. Fellow sophomore Dakota Michaels stepped up into the starting quarterback job. Michaels has been starting ever since, and most likely will start Friday’s game against McKinney North.
“Bowman has been looking good, but whether he plays or not is a gametime decision,” head football coach Matt Green said.
The team has had limited success with Michaels at quarterback suffering back to back losses to Frisco and Wylie, before rebounding with a 48-7 win over Greenville, moving the team’s record to 3-2.
“Dakota has done a good job of taking command of the offense,” Green said. “That’s tough to do for a sophomore, it took us by surprise how quickly he got a good grasp on the offense.”
Although both Sells and Michaels are sophomores, Sells has been the starting quarterback since early in his freshman year giving him a full season of experience. Michaels however, had no varsity experience his freshman year.
“I think Dakota has done a very good job of playing quarterback,” quarterback Bowman Sells said. “I feel confident that we can win with him at quarterback.”
With a calm and confident approach, Michaels has cherished his time at quarterback and hopes to get the opportunity to play it again in the near future.
“I’m glad that Bowman is healthy and coming back,” Michaels said. “I really like playing quarterback and I’m pumped for this weeks game, and I hope i can play more quarterback in the future.”
