At 7:30 a.m. every Friday, the varsity football team, along with their friends and family, meet in the lecture hall for Breakfast with Champions. This tradition was initiated by head coach Matt Green and his coaching staff during the 2012-2013 school year.

“I like starting our game day off as a family,” head coach Matt Green said. “It gets our mind on the game day, it gets everyone together, and it motivates our kids. It gets them in the mode for game day.”

Parents, siblings, and even members of the community with no direct relation to the players, line the back rows of the lecture hall ready to hear Coach Green talk about the team.

“It’s pretty much a community thing,” senior Chochy Luce said. “We do it so that family and friends can come and hear how the team is doing and learn more about that week’s opponent.”

After the team reviews film from the previous week for the upcoming game, they watch a motivational video made by the coaching staff.

“The video is my favorite part of the morning,” Luce said.

Next, the team brings in the chaplain to host ‘team chapel’. This is when the parents and community members leave and the coaching staff and the team are left alone.

“[The team chaplain] comes in and speaks the word of God and how it can relate to our lives and each week’s game,” Luce said.

This Friday morning tradition is one that the team plans to continue as the years progress.

“It is a blessing that our coaching staff has brought to us,” senior Braxton Mayfield said.
