Helping others is something senior Madi Pfaff likes to do. Now she’s being rewarded for her community involvement, receiving scholarships from schools across the United States for her outstanding leadership.
“I’ve received a lot of scholarships from in-state schools and out of state schools; the big one that I’ve gotten is the Coca-Cola scholarship,” Pfaff said.
The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation gives 200 students $10,000 and 50 students $20,000 for academic use. A tremendous amount of community service, as well as academic achievements are required for this award, which Pfaff has been able to demonstrate.
“I’ve been a part of pals and NHS, and many other service projects with organizations like GoMAD, Samaritan Inn, and the ACO,” Pfaff said.
Along with many other outside service projects, Pfaff has also been able to impact a low income apartment complex in McKinney called Redbud. For the past 7 years, she has not only tutored and mentored children there, but she has also organized events, sports camps, and carnivals for residents.
“Madi is an extremely special young woman. Everywhere she goes, she makes others around her better,” head volleyball coach Ryan Mitchell said. “She helped take the volleyball program to places that it would not have gone without her involved. She learned how to put a goal in front of her and work tirelessly at accomplishing something, and also learned tons of leadership qualities that will stay with her the rest of her life.”
Not only has Pfaff been a strong leader throughout the community, she has also been a part of the varsity volleyball team as a defensive specialist.
“Madi was able to contribute to the success of the team from other areas other than just being a player,” assistant volleyball coach Erin McClanahan said. “She offered so much to the program because of her intangibles, her leadership, and her work ethic, and that means so much to a program, and it will carry over into next year when she’s gone.”
Although she is not continuing volleyball beyond high school, Pfaff has plans to attend either Duke University in North Carolina, or University of Texas in Austin.
“Right now the plan is to major in public health, the concentration of biostatistics, and mathematics.”
