The most consecutive state championships by a volleyball team is 16 by Cade Episcopal School of Acadiana. With four straight under their belt, Leopard volleyball coach Ryan Mitchell has a hard time thinking about five.
“I can’t even imagine the feeling it would be like to win a fifth title, but I don’t think about stuff like that, we just focus on winning one match at a time and see where it leads us,” Mitchell said.
So far, its led them to the regional semi-finals stage of the playoffs. Compiling a regular season record of 42-4, Mitchell is happy the postseason is here.
“I think its such a blessing making it this far once again,” sophomore Hannah Field said. “It’s a great experience and it makes for a great opportunity to continue the season with my family.”
District champions for the sixth consecutive time, it’s the team’s first year in 4A. But the move up hasn’t slowed the Leopards. But despite going 14-0 in district, nothing can be taken for granted.
“I thought that our team adapted well to the new competition,” freshman Sarah Langs said.
The team has nine seniors on the team meaning next year they will have to replace almost all of their players.
“Each year people wonder how we will be able to survive after the group leaves,” Mitchell said. “They will certainly be missed for sure, they’re an amazing group of girls that have done so much for this program and school.”
