Growing up many of us wear warned to avoid swallowing bubblegum because it will stay in the body’s system for 7 years.
Myth!
The human body is designed to digest in a matter of hours or at the most days, but not for years. The sweeteners and softeners in the gum are no match for the enzymes and stomach acid that dissolved the food. But it is the gum base that “sticks” around.
Gum base is what makes gum chewy, and is designed to resist the digestive properties of saliva in the mouth. But when swallowed, gum base gets the same treatment as normal food.
The only problem that might come with swallowing gum is the chance of choking, but this happens with gum as often as it does with any other food.
