Homecoming week comes with a lot of different activities from dressing up to decorating halls. One of the most popular: Powder Puff football. With each grade fielding an all girls team, a day that began outside ended inside with the juniors claiming the championship.
Students went to first through fourth period. For the first time in school history the games were a part for the school day.
First the juniors and sophomores watched “Mr. Lovejoy” while the freshmen faces the seniors in powder puff football. After that, the juniors and sophomores met while the freshman and seniors watch “Mr. Lovejoy” as it was performed a second time.
On the field, the seniors walked away with the 28-0 win.
“Our knowledge of the game, our skill, and our preparation really helped us win the first game,” senior Brooke Puckett said.
When the juniors faced the sophomores, the game started out full of action with each scoring seven in the first half.
The sophomores were confident going into the second half.
“We can do this. Just focus on getting the flags and staying with your man and we can win,” sophomore coach Kaden Vannorsdel said at halftime.
The juniors pulled it out with another touchdown in the second half resulting in a 14-7 win.
Then it was juniors versus seniors for the championship game. But due to the day’s high temperatures, the final game was moved to the main gym.
Moving the game to the gym was a decision that not many were happy about, especially the seniors.
“Not being able to us a football field really hurt us. Our speed was not able to really be used to its full potential,” Puckett said.
With the seniors unable to utilize a full field, the juniors were victorious beating the seniors 21-14.
“I think we won because we never gave up and we just went out there to have some fun,” junior Sammi Curry said.
The majority of people involved with Powder Puff said that they really enjoyed the experience.
“It was a lot of fun, I really enjoyed coaching the girls and getting to know about them and I loved seeing how much better everyone got from day one,” sophomore coach Mick Ellis said. “Overall it was a great experience and I can’t wait to do it again!”
