Caring–Our Way of Life. This is the motto of Key Club, a popular community service club on campus.
Some students may not know, but our school’s Key Club is actually part of an international organization. Key Club International defines itself as “an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership.”
Key Club was a new organization last year, but not very structured according to students that were in the club. Many students did not even know the club existed, which led to minimal membership. This year, Key Club is better known and has grown greatly, both in membership and maturity.
Key Club means business this year, and they show it in their membership requirements. Students must have 50 hours of community service completed each year. All meetings are mandatory, students can only have two unexcused absences from meetings before they are put on probation, and are expelled from the club if they repeatedly miss meetings and do not meet their service hour requirements.
Some of their projects include Kiva, which provides microloans to people in impoverished countries, and Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a charity that benefits research for childhood cancer.
