Orchestra puts on their poker face for last concert

The high school and middle school orchestra teamed up on Monday, May 14 to perform the program’s last concert of the 2011-2012 school year.

The show featured 3 different middle school orchestras and a combined high school orchestra, with songs ranging from classics to fun pieces, like a Lady Ga Ga medley, performed by the top middle school orchestra, or scenes from the Phantom of the Opera, a piece the high school performed.

The orchestra offers a unique experience to graduating seniors in allowing them to perform a senior solo in the last concert of the year. The tradition has been 3 years in the running, and this year featured solos from seniors Mikayla Son on the violin, Valaria Morris, also on the violin, Trey Anderson on the bass, and Evan Stewart on the piano, an extension of a previous independent study.

The program recognized a total of 8 seniors, a larger number than ever before. Additionally, the seniors themselves showed their gratitude to the growing orchestra program, the booster club that has supported it, and especially the high school teacher Joey Sloan, who was brought to the school 3 years ago.

The concert lasted close to an hour and a half, significantly longer than the performances of the previous year, but still hosted an audience of parents, teachers, and friends that nearly filled the auditorium.
