Cone of good luck

Its significance has been questioned by many. It’s been photographed, danced around, and passed through the halls. It started off as a mere prank, but has grown into much more. It’s a mystery to the school, but to the soccer girls, it’s a newfound tradition. It’s the infamous playoff cone.

“I think it’s a good and funny tradition to get support from the school for playoffs for soccer because everyone is like ‘Whoa it’s a cone!’ and they wonder what it is for,” freshman Dom Mazero said.

The tradition started at a team dinner when one of the players found a traffic cone and the girls all decided to sign it. One of the girls brought it to school the next day and tried to pass it off, and it began to resemble a game of tag.

“We have rules about the cone. If you make eye contact with the girl who has it, you’re not allowed to run away. You have to take the cone,” senior Leah Adler said.

The cone is brought to school on game days and is passed around the halls to other team members throughout the day. Whoever holds the cone at the end of the day has to bring it to the game that night, and keep it until the next game day.

“I get a lot of weird looks when I’m carrying it, but I feel like it kind of raises the importance of playoffs for the school and so I’m okay with carrying it around,” Mazero said.

The cone has brought good luck to the soccer team as they won their first playoff game 5-0 against Molina. The girls are keeping the tradition going and plan to bring the cone to all their games.

“We’re bringing the cone again tonight for our game against Terrell, so hopefully it’ll bring us good luck again,” Adler said.
