Five new additions to the All-State Choir

The choir department continues to impress as a rare but remarkable number of five students qualified for the All-State Choir.

“It’s probably one of the most exciting moments of my life because singing is my passion and I get to go and sing with the best high school singers in the whole entire state,” sophomore Rebecca Bradley said.

The road to All-State is long, beginning with the All-Region audition. From there, 60 boys and 60 girls that are accepted to advance compete in the Pre-Area competition where just 20 boys and 20 girls move onto the All-State audition. The top 40 students from seven different areas of Texas compete for 32 spots in the Mixed Choir, 40 spots in the Treble (Women’s Choir), and 40 spots in the Men’s Choir. The newest additions to the All-State Choir feel rewarded for their work.

“It feels so good because I prepared ever since July and I really wanted to make it because last year I didn’t and this year I had the opportunity to audition again and I made it,” Bradley said.

Now, it’s on to the Texas Music Educators’ Convention in San Antonio, where the All-State Choir will perform on February 11.

“We are thrilled, we are proud, we are so excited! They’re going to have a wonderful experience,” Assistant Choir Director Brooke Grall said. “The whole process was very rewarding, and they definitely earned it.”

The following students made the All-State Choir:

Junior Erin Shafranek, First Chair Alto 1, Mixed Choir.

Senior Madeline Wise, First Chair Alto 2, Mixed Choir.

Sophomore Rebecca Bradley, Fourth Chair Soprano 1, Mixed Choir.

Sophomore Courtney DuVal, Fifth Chair Soprano 2, Treble Choir.

Sophomore Jonathan McInnis, Second Chair Tenor 1, Men’s Choir.

Liz Schasel has yet to introduce herself in a staff biography without a joke about being vertically-challenged, and wouldn’t feel comfortable starting her senior year without continuing the short-lived tradition (there it is). Ready for the multitude of adventures this year has to offer, Liz has mentally prepared herself to sacrifice sleep for the success of her many extracurriculars which include The Red Ledger, Relay For Life committee, school and club soccer, Key Club, NHS, and the Dallas Swing Dance Society. She also tutors adorable children and works at Pie Five where she is an acclaimed pizza architect. In her free time, Liz spontaneously explodes into billions of particles, injuring those within a 50 mile radius. Luckily for mankind, Liz has never experienced free time, as this tragic event has yet to occur. Thrilled to have one last year’s worth of Modern Epic Poems to write (self-proclaimed epics by the modern definition, not by literary standards), Liz is ready to embark on her third consecutive year as editor of The Red Ledger and looks forward to everything her wonderful, dedicated, bacon-crazed staff will accomplish.
