Review: “Bioshock: The Collection” on PC falls short of expectations

Review%3A+Bioshock%3A+The+Collection+on+PC+falls+short+of+expectations

When “Bioshock” was released to the world on Aug. 21, 2007, it was immediately swamped by reviews praising its genius. When “Bioshock 2” was released in 2010, the reviews were less than welcoming, as the sequel failed to live up to its predecessor. “Bioshock Infinite” however, brought the series back from the brink. Now, new and old fans can enjoy all the games in one pack, remastered to look even better than ever.

At least, that was the plan.

Let’s start with the original. “Bioshock Remastered” looks much better than it did 10 years ago, but still has all the bugs it did in 2007. FPS stuttering and graphic errors personally affected my gameplay a few times, but this is much more common for others it seems, as is constant crashing. These issues seem to not plague the consoles, but on PC, the games (except “Bioshock Infinite” which was not remastered on PC) are a mess. “Bioshock 2 Remastered” looks the same as it did when first released. Half of the game is retextured, but the other half is not. There were no bugs during my play time, but the fact that the graphics had not been improved is truly the issue here.

The selling point of these games was that they were going to fix all the issues and provide players with second-to-none graphics. In some ways 2K delivered, but as far as PC players are concerned, they totally dropped the ball. No bugs have been fixed, the graphics are not all that better, and “Bioshock Infinite” wasn’t even remastered for PC players. What was the point then, besides a huge cash grab?

It pains me to say this, but don’t buy this game, even if you have a console. Companies should not benefit from misleading marketing. The games are great, so I recommend playing them, but avoid the collection if you can.

It is a shame, because 2K could have done so much with this. Unfortunately, they have just put a huge stain on an amazing series.

Cameron Stapleton, A&E Editor
Senior Cameron Stapleton is happy to embark on her first year as A&E editor, but not so happy that her Red Ledger career will be over in May. Stapleton has many interests, but has narrowed them down to the absolute best: video games, history, reading and military science. At times when she is not doing homework or working on school projects, she can be found reading a good book or wandering around with friends trying to become the very best Pokemon master. Also known as that kid who knows “too much” about WWII, she has mastered the art of making her English class groan out loud during socratic seminars by just mentioning the past. Stapleton has almost mastered how to run short distances somewhat fast and can make killer oatmeal. Just in case being a Pokemon trainer doesn’t work out (she still has hope), she is training to jump out of perfectly good planes for a living, because, seriously, who doesn’t want to do that? In a year, Stapleton hopes to be studying history… somewhere.
