Column: If prom goes wrong

Prom can either be a great time, or awkward and sweaty. From maybe not knowing your date very well to the awkwardness of white teenage boy dancing, many things could go wrong.

If things start to fade during your prom night and you are realizing that you may be having a bad time, I have some tips for you to spice up your night.

Luckily prom is at the Perot Museum this year, so if you aren’t feeling the whole prom vibe, you can go read up about how Triceratops survived during the Maastrichtian era. After reading up on some dino facts, go around and quiz your peers on the sweet new knowledge you just soaked in: They will love it! Relentlessly pursue your friends with dino facts until they know just as much about the pentaceratops and its massive skull.

Another great idea that could make things interesting is to call your date the wrong name the entire night. There are two ways to go about this: Either continue to call them the same wrong name the entire night, OR say a name that is very close the first time then slowly fade further and further away. Claire, Clarence, Chlorine, Clark, Carrie, Car, Cat, Dog, Piano. The options are endless with this one. To add a little more pizzaz, you could also keep mistaking your date for another person the entire time, calling some random person your true beloved, whether it be another person in the group, the waiter at dinner, or a random chaperone at the dance.

If all else fails, you could do stray away from the typical formal wear of prom and dress up in something that makes you happy. For example, you could put on a Batman costume and act like you are at a Halloween party and refuse anyone trying to tell you otherwise. The most important thing abou this is to stay in character, constantly ask where Rachel is, and when people tell you, “I don’t know where she is” or “What you are talking about,” throw small Hershey Kisses at them until they give you an answer. Although you may lose friends doing something like this, it could be a great way to counteract a bad prom experience.

Note, these tips are only for people who are having a bad time, not for the majority of people who will be having a great prom experience. Prom is a fun, exciting time and lots of people have put in hard work to make it happen. Enjoy the night, but just know if things start to go wrong, you have some backup plans to save you from boredom.
